Enamored with America

So far, I haven't made any promises to you or myself about this blog space. I haven't stressed about a consistent posting schedule, or been strict about the type of posts I write. Like the fact that so far almost every post has been about motivation? That honestly wasn't the direction I was envisioning for this blog at all, but it's what's been on my heart to share. And I love that, because the one expectation I do have is that what I write is true and real and relevant to me, and because of that, hopefully some part will resonate with you too. So to jump into this post, let me tell you what's been on my heart recently.

I'm kind of in love with America.

I'm kind of in love with America. When I travel from Virginia to Maryland to visit my family, I either have to go through or around Washington, DC, and I choose "through" every time. Even if it's midnight and I'm alone, I still love driving through the city. Driving up Constitution Avenue and seeing the Washington Monument and the White House illuminated at night. Passing by the National Museum of American History, where the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the national anthem is on display. It is such a privilege to be able to drive through the capital of the United States on a whim, to see these symbols of our nation in real life. Every time I go through Washington, I’m humbled by the experience. And recently, I've appreciated it more than ever.

It is such a privilege to be able to drive through the capital of the United States on a whim, to see these symbols of our nation in real life.

With all the crazy things happening in America, it's still amazing to see that so many people from around the world want to be here. People who aren’t citizens and can’t just waltz through the US capital on a whim. There are people who would give anything to step foot into this country, and it's made me realize how much I take for granted the blessing of being born in America.

For instance, I've wanted to visit New York City for years, but have never been. There are so many amazing art galleries and museums, and there is so much history packed into every block. It was even the original capital of the United States. But when it comes to actually planning a trip, my schedule has always been "too busy" or figuring out the logistics just seems like a headache. I get on social media and see people from other countries wishing they could visit New York, and I'm like "me too, friend." But in actuality, I could hop in my car right now and drive there in a matter of hours, and all it would cost me is toll and gas money. So it's pretty ridiculous that I've never been, just because I've basically been "too busy" to make it happen.

So instead of passing up on experiences just because I don't want to drive a few hours away, I'm trying to be more conscious of taking advantage of my citizenship in this crazy and amazing place, because it's not a light thing. Even on our worst days as a nation, there are so many reasons to be grateful. So step one for me: Step out of my box and make this New York trip happen (and *fingers crossed* that should be very soon!)

So let me know, friends. Day trip ideas, cheap travel tips. What you love about America and where you're headed next. Something you're trying not to take for granted.

As always, thank you for being here.
